System doesn't reward winners - Ambrose Print E-mail
December 11, 2006 12:00am

MARCOS Ambrose has attacked V8 Supercar organisers for changing the sport for the worse.

The two-time V8 champion yesterday blasted the points system that enabled Rick Kelly to win the 2006 title without winning a round.
"The bottom line is the racing reflects the way the racing is set up, and for a guy to win a championship who hasn't won a round, is that what the sport really wants? Is that what the fans want?" Ambrose told the Herald Sun.

"The points system sucks, bottom line. It is a bad points system that doesn't reward winners.

"The racing has changed dramatically since I came into the sport and a large majority of that comes down to the way the rules are interpreted, inconsistency in the rules and the points system."

Ambrose was odds-on favourite to win his third V8 Supercar title in 2005 but controversial decisions, including rulings on collisions and the docking of 25 points for reckless driving at the Perth 400, hampered his title bid.

"I got fined a lot in V8 Supercars because you have to do what the series wants you to in not disrespecting the sport, but now I can really let loose," Ambrose said.

"We lost the championship last year because of decisions that went against us, and penalties that went against us and accidents that went against us and that is because I am trying to win races.

"That is what the fans want to see and what I do, whether it is V8 Supercars, NASCAR or go-karts."

V8 Supercar organisers have announced a points system for next year's championship that offers more reward for winning. The new system also removes the safety net that was in place this season that allowed drivers to drop their worst round from their tally.

Ambrose was at Phillip Island to watch the V8 Supercar showdown, the first time he has attended a V8 race meeting without driving.

"It's nice to be back in the paddock and not be in trouble for anything," Ambrose said.

The Ford ace is taking a break after a busy debut season in the Craftman's Truck NASCAR series that saw him collect two top five finishes.
