In 1964, exactly 100 Fairlane 2 door sedans were partially built by the Ford Motor Company and shipped to Dearborn Steel Tubing for completion.
These cars were finished as drag race-only machines for Super Stock, Super Stock Automatic, and A/FX class Drag Racing competition.
Many had glamorous careers, while some had accidents with tragic results.
Today, Thunderbolts are highly valued collector and nostalgic racers.
Many are still known to exist, and most that aren't around are known to have been wrecked.
Due to the use of fibreglass and aluminium components to achieve a very light weight, the Thunderbolt Fairlanes had a decal on the glovebox that read:
"This vehicle has been built especially as a lightweight competitive car & includes certain fiberglass & aluminum components, because of the specialized purpose for which this car was built, & in order to achieve maximum weight reduction, normal quality standards of the Ford Motor Company in terms of exterior panel fit & surface appearance are not met in this vehicle. This information is included on this vehicle to assure that all customers who purchase this car are aware of the deviation from the regular high appearance quality standards of the Ford Motor Company."
Ford actually spent $2000 more than the sticker price to produce these cars...
